Kabini River Lodge

Kabini River Lodge run by the Karnataka Tourism department is a delightful place set on the banks of the river Kabini, dammed to create a large backwaters teeming with bird life. An old hunting lodge of the Maharajah of Mysore, the ethnic resort with colonial style bungalows, cottages and tented accommodation offers a tranquil getaway, situated at the southern end of the Nagarhole National Park. 

Location: Karapur, Karnataka. About 220 km from Bangalore and 80 km from Mysore.

Prominent fauna: Elephants, gaur (Indian bison), leopards, crocodiles, chital (spotted deer), barking deer and the occasional tiger. 

Best time to visit: October to May. Open through the year.

Minimum stay recommended: 02 nights 

Destination Guide: Early morning jeep safaris into the jungle with one of the excellent resident naturalists or a ride on the river Kabini in a motorboat or a coracle (a native boat shaped like a round, flat basket ) provide ample opportunity for wildlife sightings. Tree stumps protruding from the water provide surrealistic perches for the many exotic birds. You can see the osprey, crested serpent eagle, brown-headed fishing eagle, golden-backed woodpecker, stork and peafowl among almost 250 species of bird life. A well equipped library stocked with wildlife books and videos provides hours of entertainment and knowledge. Accommodation: The Kabini River Lodge is a charming destination built in the colonial style. The ambience of an old world charm is evident in the spacious rooms with period furniture. The common dining area is a huge, open-air circular space overlooking the river. 

Note: If you're driving in from Bangalore, you can also visit the historic temple town of Srirangapatna and the Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary- a paradise for bird watchers, made up of small islands on the Kaveri river.
