Jaisalmer Camel Safari :

Let the Ship of the Desert take you on a voyage of discovery over the dunes !

Jaisalmer is a frontier town, perched on the edge of the Thar desert. The sandstone 840 year old fort rises like a mirage from the desert sands - an ancient bastion guarding a centuries old trade route. It is also unique in that it is a "living fort." More than 5000 people live within its walls; a complete community with temples, bazaars, cows, scooters and washing hanging quaintly from lines stretched across imposing archways ! Some carry on their traditional trade; others, though, have turned to the more lucrative business of hiring out their homes as guest houses to tourists !

A 2 day camel safari from Jaisalmer is a unique way to savour the mystique of the desert - tiny villages almost untouched by time, incredible sunsets over the wind-swept dunes, a million stars blazing in a velvet sky as you camp out by a roaring fire....

Day 1 :
Depart Jaisalmer after breakfast astride your personal riding camel for Badabagh ( lake and royal cenotaphs) and arrive at Ramkunda in time for lunch. After a short rest continue to Roopsi and Lodurva ( ancient Jain temples). Dinner and overnight at Lodurva.

Day 2 :
After breakfast at the camp ride out to Amar Sagar ( lake and temples ) via the villages of Kala and Chundi. After lunch ride back to Jaisalmer, reaching just before sunset.

How to get there :
By air from Delhi, Jaipur or Jodhpur

By car from Jodhpur - 285 Km. Visiting the ancient temple complex of Osian enroute.

The very specialty of Rajasthan is the presence of color and vibrancy everywhere you go. The fact that its people haven't allowed geographical and climatic challenges to mar their zest for life is really admirable. Don't worry about your comfort because there will be a band of local people accompanying your group on these safaris and will be there to take care of everything for you.
A camel safari in Rajasthan can be of any duration. It can be an hour long ride that gives you a feel of the desert or it can even be a 15 day long trip. So, you can easily pick a tour that is tailor made for your comfort. Safaris around the cities of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner or in the Shekhawati region are the most popular routes. You would also come across old ruins, quaint villages and beautiful monuments on your safari. They are great places to explore and exude a romantic charm that is hard to ignore.

Notes :

The ideal time for camel safaris are the winter months from November to March. Rajasthan’s summer is too hot and unsuitable for camel safaris. In winter the days are cool and balmy, ideal for riding out in the open desert, going past sand-dunes, villages, colorfully dressed villagers, taking in the local flavor of the desert life. The nights are cold and fresh, ideal for camping. The clear skies are lit up with stars and you can see the milky-way. Enjoy the warmth of the bonfire, while fresh hot food is being cooked for you. Folk musicians and dancers will provide entertainment. Carry your woolens and though bedding is provided for an extra blanket can always be used.
