The Kerala backwaters are an extensive, interconnected network of canals, rivers, lakes and inlets. These waterways were an ancient trade route and now provide you a wonderful way to travel and see your surroundings from a new perspective. The way to travel down the backwaters is in a Kerala houseboat (kettuvallam). This is a vessel that was originally used to transport cargo, but has now been upgraded into a luxurious houseboat. It’s built entirely of wood and bamboo and tied together with coir ropes – no nails! Cruise past villages, paddy fields and yes, those inescapable coconut trees.
You’ll start your ride at Kumarakom and travel through the backwaters to Allepey (Alappuzha), Venice of the East, an ancient town with a large network of canals meandering through it.
(Contact us if you want to try an alternative cruise, with perhaps an overnight stay on a houseboat.)
